Almost 25,000 solar panels are providing green power to two WSSC Water's Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) and one offsite facility located in Carroll County, MD. Two of the three 2-megawatt (MW) ground-mounted installations, containing 8,500 solar panels were commissioned in 2013 at the Western Branch WRRF in Upper Marlboro, Md., and the Seneca WRRF in Germantown, Md. The third site, located in Carroll County, MD is also 2 MW and was commissioned in 2020. The three facilities are the result of a Purchase Power Agreement with Washington Gas Energy Systems and Standard Solar, Inc. Check out the photo gallery.
In 2025, WSSC Water plans to award a contract for an additional 6 MW of solar power in Washington County, MD for WSSC Water. WSSC Water will own 100 of the Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and all of the environmental attributes generated from the project. the 12 MW site is expected to produce 22,000 MWh/year for WSSC Water for the next 20 years.
