Washington Gas Energy Systems owns and operates these solar installations. Standard Solar designed and installed the systems at the wastewater treatment plants, which clean and treat used water and wastewater and safely return clean water to the environment. Together, the solar arrays at the two plants generate approximately 6.6 million kWh of solar energy each year. Solar power provides on average 17 percent of the electricity required to operate the two plants, saving ratepayers approximately $3 million over the life of the agreement. The systems help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions equal to avoiding the use of approximately 358,680 gallons of gasoline each year.

Construction at Western Branch began in April 2013 and May 2013 at Seneca.

The photo gallery shows phases of installation. The solar modules face south and are at an angle of 25-degrees. This produces maximum output from the array. Regardless of the topography, the modules form parallel rows.

Final tests are being conducted on the two solar arrays.

August - September 2013

WSSC Water making great progress on the installation of two MW at Western Branch and two MW at Seneca. First, the inverter pads were installed and the solar modules were placed. Then the inverters were installed, electrical connections to the inverters, and module interconnections.
