Laurel, Md. – January 17, 2025 – Applications for the 2025 WSSC Water Commissioners' Engineering Scholarship are now being accepted. Winners receive $2,000 annually and are eligible for up to $8,000 over four consecutive years. In addition, scholarship winners are given priority for paid summer internships.

The scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate engineering students and graduating high school seniors accepted into a college engineering program.

"As we strive to find efficient and cost-effective solutions to address our aging infrastructure challenges, and combat PFAS and other emerging contaminants, we know the next generation entering the engineering field will play a crucial role in the future of water management," said Commission Chair T. Eloise Foster. "I strongly encourage the engineering students in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties to apply for this exceptional learning opportunity."

"Workforce development is one of our strategic priorities and these scholarships allow future engineers to dip their toes into and explore the water sector," said WSSC Water General Manager and CEO Kishia L. Powell. "They are just one of the many tools we use to attract the best and brightest talent to fulfill our mission-critical roles. We hope students take the plunge and dive into a career at WSSC Water.”

Named in honor of former commissioners Joyce Starks and Gene W. Counihan, the scholarship program aims to financially assist students from WSSC Water's service district to further their engineering studies and encourage them to consider careers in the water and water resource recovery industry.

Up to two scholarships for $2,000 each may be awarded, one to a Prince George's County resident and one to a Montgomery County resident. Winners are eligible for additional awards of $2,000 each year for up to four consecutive years as long as they meet residency and grade point average requirements. Winners also receive priority consideration for paid summer internship opportunities at WSSC Water.

Applicants must reside in WSSC Water's service district in Prince George's or Montgomery County and be enrolled in a full-time degree program at an accredited college or university that leads to a degree in one of the following areas: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science/Engineering.
