Laurel, Md. – August 22, 2024, 8:30 A.M. – WSSC Water has lifted the essential water use only request as of 8:30 a.m. today for customers in the Camp Springs Area of southern Prince George’s County.
Crews successfully completed work to connect an existing water main to the main that feeds the Camp Springs tank ahead of schedule. The result of this connection was an increase in the water level in the tank above the point where the utility can safely lift the essential water use only request.
WSSC Water appreciates the excellent conservation efforts of the Camp Springs community to limit water use as crews worked around the clock to connect another water main to the main that feeds the tank, avoiding the issuance of a Boil Water Advisory.
Possible Discolored Water
It is possible for customers in the Camp Springs area to experience discolored water following this work. WSSC Water recommends customers flush the COLD water lines in your homes or business using the following steps:
Run all COLD water taps for about five minutes or until the water runs clear.
Begin with the lowest faucet in your home or business and then open the other faucets one at a time, moving from your lowest floor to your highest.
Once the water runs clear, usually in five minutes or less, turn off your faucets in the same order, lowest to highest.
You should also flush your refrigerator's water lines.
Background
On Monday, August 19, ongoing planned water main construction work in the area caused an unexpected impact to the flow of water to the Camp Springs tank. To address this issue, crews worked throughout the night on Monday and completed water main work on Tuesday to help enhance the flow of water to the tank. On Wednesday, crews began work to connect an existing water main to the main that feeds the tank. That work was successfully completed ahead of schedule this morning.
Longer Term
WSSC Water continues to work on plans to make an additional connection to the water main that feeds the Camp Springs tank. This work is scheduled to start in mid-September and take approximately one month to complete. This work is expected to add redundancy to the water main the feeds the tank and enhance water flow to the tank.
