Laurel, Md. – June 20, 2023 – WSSC Water Commissioners are holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 21, beginning at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held in person at the WSSC Water building in Laurel, is open to the public, and will be available via livestream from WSSC Water’s website.  During this month’s meeting, Commissioners will select a new chair and vice chair for Fiscal Year (FY) 2024.

Commissioners also are scheduled to formally adopt WSSC Water’s $1.6 billion FY 2024 operating and capital budget. The budget, which the Montgomery and Prince George’s County Councils unanimously approved in May, invests in the reliability and resilience of critical infrastructure and includes $3.5 million in financial assistance to help customers in need.

The budget is based on a seven percent average rate increase and a seven percent increase in Account Maintenance and Infrastructure Investment fees. A typical customer with a family of three using 50 gallons of water per person daily would see a quarterly increase of $16.43 in their bill. The rate increase conforms with limits both Montgomery and Prince George’s County Councils set when they approved WSSC Water’s Spending Affordability Guidelines.

The FY 2024 budget and new rates begin on July 1, 2023. Revenue generated by the new rates will help repair and replace critical water and wastewater infrastructure, which protects public health, creates jobs, safeguards the environment and supports equity and social justice initiatives.

During the meeting, Commissioners will also announce the winner of this year’s Commissioners’ Engineering Scholarship.

The meeting includes a call-in option to ensure interested stakeholders not in attendance can provide input. Those watching virtually and wishing to speak should call in at the beginning of the comments section, which begins shortly after 10 a.m. Callers will be admitted from the “lobby” when public comments start.
