Laurel – August 10, 2016: WSSC’s Police Department is pleased to announce that nine new officers have been sworn in for duty. General Manager/CEO Carla A. Reid had the honor of swearing in the officers during a ceremony today at WSSC’s headquarters in Laurel.
“I am honored to have these officers serving and protecting on behalf of the Commission,” said Reid. “This group brings collective experience from a number of excellent local agencies, including Anne Arundel County Police, Prince George’s County Police, Metropolitan Police District of Columbia, Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Howard County Police and the University of Maryland, Baltimore.”
“Our recent hires symbolize a significant change in the direction of the WSSC Police Department as we work to maintain public safety in the Sanitary District,” said Harvey Baker, Chief of Police.
WSSC’s Police Department is comprised of 27 sworn police officers and 14 guards and support staff. The police officers provide security and law enforcement services to employees, customers and visitors within WSSC’s 1,000 square miles within Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. They also protect the Commission’s multi-billion dollar assets, including 250 facilities.
The officers are also responsible for the protection of approximately 6,000 acres of WSSC’s watershed property, which extends into Howard County, and the safety of more than 100,000 visitors to WSSC’s recreation areas each year.
WSSC’s Police Department was created in 2002 by the Maryland Legislature. The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks highlighted the need for a WSSC Police Department to combat the threat of terrorist attacks. Prior to 2002, the Commission had a security unit, not a police force.
The officers sworn in today are: Lieutenant Michelle Milam, Lieutenant Kurt Wall, Sergeant James Richards, Investigator Reginald Ware, Officer Amy Clark, Officer Michael Delaney, Officer Howard Johnson Jr., Officer James Lawrence and Officer John Scott, Jr.
