Laurel, Maryland – May 9, 2005: The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) will begin late night / early morning sewer work tonight through Friday, May 13 in various communities in Brentwood, Landover Hills, Cheverly, Mount Rainier, and Cottage City areas of Prince George's County. The sewer work is part of WSSC's continuing efforts to enhance a wastewater collection system that protects public health and helps return clean water to the environment.
The sewer main work will take place, weather permitting, in sewer mains under the following roads: Allison Street, Barton Road, Cooper Lane, Darby Court, Darby Road, Deviltree Court, Dorman Street, Eldridge Street, Fairwood Road, Florida Avenue, Goodwin Street, Gramby Street, Harmon Avenue, Ingalls Avenue, Landing Way, Lupine Court, Maryland Avenue, Meadow Trial Lane, Munsey Street, Old Landover Road, Osborn Road, Otis Street, Parkwood Street, Perry Court, Pogonia Court, Quincy Street, Randolph Street, Shepherd Street, 64th Avenue, 65th Avenue, 68th Place, Spirea Court, Standish Drive, Taylor Street, Thornwood Road, Warner Avenue, and Warner Court.
The inspection work will take place overnight from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to take advantage of low wastewater flows. Crews will open manholes in these areas to monitor wastewater flows to determine if groundwater is infiltrating the sanitary sewer. Groundwater infiltration can deplete pipe flow capacity, increase wastewater treatment costs and may indicate pipe defects. Water or wastewater services will not be impacted.
The nighttime sewer work is part of WSSC's comprehensive Beaverdam Branch sewer basin study that started summer 2004. The multi-year study will capture data on rainfall, wastewater flows, the conditions of pipes and manholes, and areas where sewer mains have become exposed due to erosion in creeks and streambeds. Investigators also will review growth patterns to develop plans to meet future wastewater needs.
Beaverdam Creek is a tributary of the Anacostia River. The basin contains more than 180 miles of sewer mains ranging from 6 to 66 inches in diameter, and transports approximately 8 million gallons of sewage per day to the Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant in Washington, D.C.
To report a water or sewer emergency, customers may call WSSC's 24-hour Emergency Response number at 301-206-4002.
