LAUREL, Md. (August 20, 2009): The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission has awarded a 20-year-old University of Maryland mechanical engineering student a $1,000 scholarship. Anne Lederer, a senior from Brookeville, Md., was presented with the award during the monthly meeting of the WSSC Commissioners.
After graduation next June, Lederer, who had a 4.1 average in her junior year, said she plans to pursue a career in engineering. “The scholarship will help me further my education and now I can spend more time working on projects,” she said. Lederer is a member of Engineers Without Borders, a student-run organization that designs community projects locally and in third-world countries. This year she participated in a project that filtered run-off water entering the Anacostia Watershed. Last year she was with a team that helped increase the water supply for the people of Burkina Faso, a famine plagued West African nation.
“Anne Lederer is a great example of the kind of student we want to encourage to pursue a career in engineering. Hopefully, Anne will be interested in working for WSSC following graduation,” said Commission Vice Chair Joyce Starks. “I always envisioned this scholarship as one way to develop the next generation of WSSC leaders.” The Commissioners, in acknowledgement of Starks’ strong support of the scholarship program, have agreed to name the scholarship in her honor.
To qualify for the scholarship, students must be a resident of Prince George’s County or Montgomery County, attend a Maryland university or college, be enrolled in an engineering degree program and write a 400- to 1000-word essay on water/wastewater engineering.
Applications for the 2010 scholarship will be accepted after January 1. For more information contact the Office of the Commissioners, (301) 206-8200.
