OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS & COMMUNITY RELATIONS WSSC Honors Employees Called to Active Military DutyEight WSSC members of the reserves and National Guard were activated because of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars
LAUREL, MD (August 19, 2009): The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission today honored eight employees who were activated for military duty as members of a reserve or National Guard unit between 2003 and 2009. The group was presented with plaques that thanked them for “service and commitment to our country and to WSSC.” Seven of the eight employees served tours of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan during that period. “As a retired Air Force Colonel I have profound respect for the men and women who serve in our United States military,” WSSC Interim General Manager Teresa D. Daniell said during the monthly WSSC Commissioners meeting. “Their commitment to this country and to protecting our freedom is inspiring.” Senior Chief Petty Officer Thomas C. Green expressed the sentiments of the entire group when he thanked Daniell and the Commissioners for their recognition and “the support you have given us and our families.” Green, a utility technician with the Customer Care North Group, was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004-2005 as a member of the fabled Navy SEABEES. Nottingham’s wife, Wanda, accepted the award because Nottingham, now a member of the Army Reserve, is away for the annual two-week Reserve duty. Lamont Queen, an administrative assistant with the Wastewater Collection Systems Group, was deployed intermediately to Iraq as a member of the Army Reserve between 2004 and 2005.
