LAUREL, MARYLAND (August 5): The Commissioners of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) voted today to extend WSSC’s interim Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) program for 120 days to ensure equal and fair access to WSSC contracting opportunities. In the 5-0-1 vote, the Commissioners also agreed to pursue conducting a disparity study to review how well the program is meeting its goals.
The establishment of WSSC’s interim MBE program followed the WSSC’s Board of Commissioners’ reauthorization of standard procedure in 2007. House Bills 691 and 692 authorized the Commission to create policies and adopt regulations establishing a minority business utilization program to facilitate the participation of responsible, certified minority business enterprises in contracts awarded by the Commission.
WSSC’s mandatory Minority Business Enterprise program ended June 30th, 2006, when the bill to continue the program did not pass the Maryland General Assembly.
Minority businesses interested in learning more about WSSC contracting opportunities can visit WSSC’s Web site at www.wsscwater.com and click on SLMBE under the Business section. They can also call the SLMBE office at (301) 206-8800.
