LAUREL (June 18, 2009): The Commissioners of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) today announced that they unanimously offered the position of WSSC General Manager to Jerry N. Johnson, who is currently the General Manager of the District of Columbia Water & Sewer Authority (DCWASA).
Commission Chair Joyce Starks said the offer is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check and a successfully negotiated contract. Johnson, who has been general manager of DCWASA for 12 years, is known for his ability to build an organization and to manage change.
The nomination of Mr. Johnson was submitted to the Commission by Prince George’s County Executive Jack B. Johnson and Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett. Commissioners agreed to Johnson for several reasons including the fact he has the level of professional experience that is critical to leading the refurbishment of WSSC’s infrastructure at this critical time in the company’s history. Also, his demonstrated ability to lead an organization the size of WSSC through change and toward the goal of becoming a world class utility was another key selection factor.
Prior to working at DCWASA, Johnson had a distinguished public service career in Virginia. He served as Director of Public Utilities and the Deputy City Manager for Operations in Richmond. He was also General Manager for the Richmond Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Director of Community Facilities.
In addition to Starks, the other Commissioners from Prince George’s County are Prem Agarwal and Dr. Juanita Miller. Montgomery County Commissioners are Gene Counihan, Adrienne A. Mandel and Dr. Roscoe M. Moore.
###
WSSC is the 8th largest water and wastewater utility in the nation, with a network of more than 5, 500 miles of fresh water pipe and nearly 5,400 miles of sewer pipeline. Serving customers in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties since 1918, our drinking water has always met or exceeded federal standards.
