LAUREL, MD, APRIL 1: In celebration of Earth Month 2008, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) will partner with the Patuxent Riverkeeper to host Patuxent River Clean-Up Day at several WSSC sites on Saturday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The public is invited to join WSSC’s watershed neighbors, area school children and scout troops to help clean up the areas around the Rocky Gorge and Triadelphia Reservoirs.
Patuxent River Clean-Up Day was started by the Patuxent Riverkeeper, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving, protecting and replenishing Maryland’s longest and deepest intrastate river. It is also the source of approximately one-third of the drinking water for WSSC customers. The event will be held at a variety of WSSC recreation sites including:
- Supplee (Lane)
- Scott’s Cove
- Big Branch
- Brown’s Bridge
- Greenbridge
- Pigtail
- Triadelphia
Participants are asked to wear old clothes and sturdy shoes. WSSC will provide water, plastic bags and gloves. We will also give each volunteer a T-shirt.
The public can register to take part at one of the sites by visiting WSSC’s home page at www.wsscwater.com. Simply click on the Earth Month link on the left-hand side of the page. For more information, contact WSSC’s Communications and Community Relations Office at (301) 206-8100.
NOTE FOR MEDIA: The majority of the participants on WSSC sites will be located at the Supplee (Lane) Recreation Area, 16904 Supplee Lane in Laurel off of Brooklyn Bridge Road, and Scott’s Cove Recreation Area, 11004 Harding Road in Laurel.
