LAUREL, MD (February 14, 2008): The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) Commissioners are offering a $1,000 scholarship to a college student from Prince George’s or Montgomery County who majors in Water/Wastewater Engineering.

The maturing WSSC workforce and the on-going need to replace and maintain an aging infrastructure will create many opportunities in the water and wastewater profession, especially in engineering. Commission Vice-Chair Joyce Starks of Prince George’s County views the scholarship as one way to develop a pool of potential hires to meet WSSC’s personnel needs while introducing new employment opportunities to aspiring engineers. She has spearheaded the scholarship initiative over the past few years. The first scholarship was awarded in 2006.

Commission Chair Adrienne A. Mandel adds, “Encouraging young talent to enter the field of water and wastewater engineering to help protect and maintain our most valuable resource is vital to the future of our industry.”

In addition to the $1,000 cash award, the scholarship winner will be offered the chance to gain valuable on-the-job experience while working as a paid summer intern.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must:

  • Attend a Maryland university/college and have a permanent home address in Prince George’s or Montgomery County.
  • Be enrolled in an engineering degree program.

To obtain an application for the scholarship, forward a letter of interest to Charlett Bundy, Esq., Corporate Secretary, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, 14501 Sweitzer Lane, Laurel, MD 20707, or, email/fax Ms. Bundy at cbundy@wsscwater.com. Applications must be postmarked by June 30, 2008. The winner will be announced at the August Commission meeting.

The six WSSC Commissioners set policy for and oversee operations of WSSC and its 1,450 employees. In addition to Chair Mandel and Vice-chair Starks the other Commissioners are Norman E. Pruitt and Gene W. Counihan of Montgomery County and Prem P. Agarwal and Dr. Juanita D. Miller of Prince George’s County. For more information about WSSC go to the WSSC web site, www.wsscwater.com
