Bi-County Water Supply Main Alignment Study
The Clean Water Connection
As part of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission’s (WSSC) ongoing efforts to provide our customers with a constant, reliable supply of safe, clean drinking water, we are pleased to inform you that WSSC will start a comprehensive alignment study this fall of a Bi-County water main project. The Bi-County water supply main is approximately 5.5-miles of 84-inch diameter water main connecting an existing main at the intersection of I-270 and Tuckerman Lane to another main in the area where Rock Creek crosses I-495 in Montgomery County. The new supply main will help transport clean drinking water from WSSC’s Potomac Water Filtration Plant (WFP) to eastern Montgomery County and most of Prince George’s County. The Potomac WFP produces approximately three-quarters of the water used by WSSC’s 1.6 million customers. The new supply main will alleviate capacity limitations from an existing 54-inch diameter main that delivers water from the Potomac WFP to the existing 96-inch diameter main at Rock Creek and I-495. Potomac Improvement Projects
The safety of drinking water is one of the most important public health issues in any society. As an agency dedicated to public health, WSSC is proud of our history of providing our customers with safe, clean drinking water -- water that meets or surpasses strict federal US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. Working to ensure continued superior water quality, WSSC is embarking on several improvement projects at our Potomac Water Filtration Plant designed to enhance plant efficiency and reliability; provide access to a cleaner, safer, more stable raw water supply; and accommodate future water needs of our customers. Cabin John Sewer Basin Study
Using state-of-the-art technology, WSSC is capturing data on rainfall, wastewater flows, the conditions of pipes and manholes and areas where sewer mains have become exposed due to erosion in creeks and streambeds in the Cabin John sewer basin. Learn more about this four-year study.
Beaverdam Branch Sewer Basin Study
Using the latest Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, WSSC is capturing data on wastewater flows, rainfall, the conditions of pipes and manholes and regions where sewer mains have become exposed due to erosion in creeks and streambeds in the Beaverdam Branch sewer basin. Water Reconstruction Program
This program consolidates several water main improvement activities designed to enhance water quality, pressure and reliability under one initiative and strategically targets funding to upgrade and/or replace aging water mains in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties. The majority of funding is dedicated to replacing older water mains previously prone to breaks with new sections of cement lined ductile iron pipe. Projects also could include cleaning and lining older water mains -- removing corrosion on the inside of cast iron water mains and lining the interior of the pipes with cement mortar.
